Ok, fine! I’ll go ahead and state the obvious. My last blog post here was last year for Mother’s Day. Shame, shame, shame! I know. With that said, I want to kick the year off with a brief update about what has been keeping me from Ello Mino Pea and you good people. And then, I want to share some of my goals for this year. Here goes…
Where have I been?
Working my full-time gig. Around the time of my last post (April), I was promoted at NPR and given the opportunity to lead the donor communications team within our fundraising division. Whoop, whoop! While the promotion was the highlight of 2017, it came with a host of new challenges and learning opportunities. For starters, I was put in the position to both build the team and craft/implement the first strategic communications plan for the division. And for the first time, I am managing more than one person—and hiring a few too! My stress levels, responsibilities and hours have exponentially increased, and I’m proud to be growing and finding my footing in this new position. In addition to these new responsibilities, I juggled some writing, including a handful of significant proposals, traveled to San Francisco to present at a national conference, and led the development of the event marketing strategy for a new regional donor event! It was a busy, albeit fulfilling, work year for me.
Traveling more than usual. A coworker asked me this year if I had TSA pre-check, and I told her that I didn’t really see the value. Well, by year’s end I wished I had it! Now, I know this isn’t as much travel as some other folks do in a year but it was a lot for me. Between work and personal obligations (and celebrating a milestone birthday), I traveled across the country (and once out of the U.S.) last year. That I can recall, I visited Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia (too many times to count), New York, California (2x), Florida, Nevada and Jamaica! I’ve racked up tons of miles, learned a lot, visited friends and family and enjoyed plenty of fun in the sun.
Failing to plan. The saying goes, if you fail to plan you plan to fail, and I did not do a great job at planning blog posts or scheduling time to create new content. Shout out to all the bloggers who are struggling with (and excelling) at this.
Asleep and watching Netflix. I’m just adding this one to be honest. Last year, my brother shared his Netflix password with me and everything else is history. On stressful days (read: weeks, months), I would come home, have what was probably a crappy dinner and then binge watch entire series—especially classics like The Office, Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show (until they stopped streaming it—bah). I also took a lot of naps instead of working through my stress. I probably could have used those hours and hours of screen/snooze time to do some interviews, or research and whip up a blog post.
Sorta dating. That’s it. That’s all you guys get! *smirk*
So, what’s in store for 2018?
I’m not really sure! That’s right. I’m still working on my vision board for the new year AND writing down my goals for the year. What I do know is that I’m focusing on three categories this year: health, wealth and happiness. Maybe I’ll update with some specifics after a little more thought. What I can say confidently is that I’m looking forward to a successful new year at work, in my personal life and this blog! Because I realize that it doesn’t matter that I took a hiatus. What matters is that I’m back and committed to being consistent.
I hope you’ll forgive my absence and stick around for new Ello Mino Pea content!
